In the summer of 2008, Chris Winfield and Dan Hesketh met two beautiful Norwegian girls in Brazil who happily tricked them into going back to Oslo. There they got together with drummer and producer Fredrik Baden and formed Casa Murilo, now a powerful six piece with the addition of Rudi Johansen on lead guitar, Håkon "The Cucumber" Møller on keys and Sturla Hinze on bass.

Metronomy - The look

Het nieuwe album heet The English Riviera. Een zeer aanstekelijk popliedje van Metronomy. Voorman is Joseph Mount uit Devon, UK. De band is in bepaalde internetkringen bekend van hun remixen voor de Gorillaz, Roots Manuva, Franz Ferdinand, Klaxons, Goldfrapp, The Young Knives, Zero 7 en Lykke Li.

The idea of The English Riviera connects Mount and co with the chunk of the South West coastline near to where he grew up. “I just fantasised that this area was a cutting edge place of music and youth culture, which it isn’t at all,” he explains. “Imagining that this part of England creates a specific kind of music – the ‘Devon Sound’ – similar to West Coast studio music of the 1970s. If you went there and you had the geographical landscape in mind you’d end up making quite reflective, introspective music. This was just me writing a fantasy about Devon being this cool place like Portland, Oregon, so saying ‘I’m from the English Riviera’ to the music press would get you a few column inches, instead of remind you of Fawlty Towers.”

Tom Vek - A chore

Erland and the Carnival - Map of an Englishman

Geweldige eerste single van Erland and the Carnival van hun nieuwe album Nightingale. Britse folk rock band. Opgezet door Simon Tong (oa van The Verve, Blur en The Good, the Bad & The Queen).

Carnival are named after the Jackson C. Frank song "My Name is Carnival" which the band have recorded a cover version of. Erland and the Carnival are best known for their contemporary arrangements of traditional Scottish and English folk songs.

Scattered trees - Four days straight / Love and leave

Lekker rockbandje dat steviger dan normaal doorpakt. Band komt uit Chicago. Bestaat al vijf jaar. Nieuw album heet Sympathy. Nou die hebben ze van mij. Door sommigen vergeleken met zalfpop (Coldplee) voor mij lekkere luisterindie. Leuke ontdekking!

Jodymoon - Who are you now?

Gisterenavond zag ik Jodymoon. Vanavond 8 april staan ze weer in het Apollo hotel (why? zit de programmeur van de kleine zaal Paradiso te slapen ofzo?). Maar goed. Op het best verstopte podium van Amsterdam staat vanavond een prachtige Nederlandse luisterband met een ziel. Een band dat meteen vanaf het eerste nummer indruk maakt. Een zangeres doe doet denken aan Rachel Yamagata (I'll find a way) of de wat bekendere Rumer (of Carpenters, wat je wilt). De strijkers maken de band wat moeilijk te plaatsen en maken het geluid van de band compromisloos. Persoonlijk mis ik een drummer die de groove in de nummers zoals I know this een lekkere duw zou geven. Ik moest na het concert aan Ray Lamontagne denken gisteren. Wat zou er gebeuren als hij Jodymoon zou produceren? Ik denk magic. Folky country die meteen je hart binnenrolt, want daartoe zijn ze in staat. Jodymoon verdient een groter podium en veel groter publiek van muziekliefhebbers. Echt een band voor de Amstelkerk of De Duif. Wie vertelt het Paradiso? Ik dan maar. Bij deze :-). Er zijn nog kaarten voor vanavond!

Of monsters and men - From Finner / Little talks

Uit IJsland deze folky band. Reykjavík om precies te zijn. Het lijkt een kwestie van tijd te zijn voordat ze overal het ijs weten te breken. Beetje Edward Sharpe, fris en erg leuk.

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Two against one (ft. Jack White)

De eerste single van het nieuwe album: Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi Present: Rome (Starring Jack White & Norah Jones). The mirror is a trigger and your mouth is a gun. Hogere school tekstschrijven plus heerlijke track. Uitgangspunt is Italiaanse filmmuziek uit de jaren zestig en zeventig. De track werden analoog opgenomen met oude muzikanten die ooit de muziek voor The Good, The Bad and The Ugly en Once upon a time in the west hebben ingespeeld.

United by their shared passion for classic Italian film music, they decided to create something special. After an intense songwriting period – writing separately at first, and then together as the songs evolved – they travelled to Rome in October 2006. Luppi made some calls and they assembled the original musicians from films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West – including the legendary Marc 4 backing band and Alessandro Alessandroni’s ‘I Cantori Moderni’ choir. Most of the musicians were in their seventies and hadn’t worked together for several decades.They booked time in Rome’s cavernous Forum Studios – formerly Ortophonic Studios, founded by the great Ennio Morricone. Burton and Luppi scoured the city for vintage equipment, using bottles of wine as payment. Every effort was made to replicate the recording practices of the 1960s/70s golden age, recording live and straight to tape, with overdubs but no electronics, computers, 21st-century effects or studio trickery - Lexrecords.com
