Heb ik een zwak voor deze band? Yep. Heb ik alle albums? Yep. Ik ben heel erg van deze Americana folky groep die ongenadig mooi weet te spelen. Van het album van vorig jaar Lost Channels is dit de nieuwe single. Weer een mooie clip. Gaat het dan toch nog goed komen in clipland?

Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian band built around the melodic folk rock songs of singer-songwriter Tony Dekker. Originally from Wainfleet, Ontario.

Interpol - Lights

Ik weet het. Maarten had hem al gepost. Maar nu met clip dan maar. Het nieuwe album laat nog een paar weken op zich wachten. Beetje Ambient begin nog, dit eerste nummer. Ze bouwen het mooi op de spanning. Hoop dat het nieuwe album nog meer los gaat. Mooie clip maar weer. Bladerunneriaans.

Interpol is one of the bands associated with the New York indie music scene, having first performed at Luna Lounge and being one of several groups that emerged out of the post-punk revival of the 2000s. The band's sound is generally a mix of bass throb and rhythmic, harmonized guitar, with a snare heavy mix, drawing comparisons to post-punk bands such as Joy Division, The Strokes and The Chameleons.

CocoRosie - Lemonade

Misschien begint het wel gewoon met de clip. Wat een beauty. En dan de muziek. Ook een lekker Björk/Tom Waits-achtig sfeertje. Het album heet: Grey Oceans. Twee Amerikaanse zussen vormen samen CocoRosie. Ergens tussen Indie en Folk in met een vleugje hiphop en opera als dat moet. Ik vind die zussen overigens ook wel beauties. Wonen in Parijs. Je bent er zo.

CocoRosie are a musical group formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady. The sisters were born and raised in the United States, but formed the band in Paris after meeting for the first time in years. Their music has been called "freak folk".

Net als je denkt dat ze niet meer terugkeren, zijn ze er toch weer. Gedoe met hun tweede album - altijd lastig! -. De new rave wave is weggezakt, maar de Klaxons weten met deze nieuwe single weer een fijne chaos te creëren.

Month of the forgotten: Bill Withers - I can't write left handed

Fat boy slim gebruikte samples uit dit nummer, maar dat terzijde. I can't write left handed is een indringend gezongen verhaal. De verkiezingen zijn net achter de rug. Het kabinet viel over de missie naar Afghanistan. Een onderwerp ("vredesmissies") dat tot mijn grote verbazing angstvallig is vermeden tijdens de debatten de laatste weken. Net als het onderwerp Europa. Het leek even alsof we totaal niet geregeerd worden door Brussels. Goed... op dit moment zitten nog veel van 'onze jongens' in het buitenland. Withers werkte zelf bij de Marine voordat hij ging zingen. Hij is bekend van het nummer: Ain't no sunshine. Hij heeft in 1985 na vermoeiende rechtzaken over de rechten de platenindustrie de rug toegekeerd. Hij beheert nu zijn eigen muziek en dat is het.

Bill Withers's creative light burned brightly throughout the 1970s and dimmed in the mid-1980s. He recorded such hits as "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lean on Me," "Use Me," and his final chartbusting single, "Just the Two of Us," (with Grover Washington). His presence on both the pop and rhythm-and-blues charts during this period was marked by the quiet assurance of his musical ability, subtle and soothing voice, the messages contained in his songs, and his innate ability to craft hit singles that appealed to listeners of all ages and races.

Month of the forgotten: The Skatalites - Silver dollar / Adams Apple

Vandaag uit het heilige gedeelte van de Vinyl collectie: The Skatalites. The creators of ska. Hadden ooit Bob Marley als leadsinger. Deze band is en was het grote voorbeeld van bands als Madness en The Specials. De groep werd in 1964 opgericht in Kingston in Jamaica en ze speelden maar tot 1965. De muzikanten van de Skatalites behoorden stuk voor stuk tot de top van wat Jamaica te bieden had. Zoals wel vaker het geval is bij groepen waarin zoveel talent is verzameld, leidde dit regelmatig tot conflicten tussen de muzikantenego's. Trombonist Don Drummond had daarnaast ernstige psychiatrische problemen. Hij belandde, nadat hij in januari 1965 zijn vriendin Anita Mahfood vermoordde, in een inrichting. De rest van de band viel korte tijd later uiteen. Drummond bleef opgesloten tot hij in 1969 zelfmoord pleegde. Chocomel heeft in hun nieuwste tv-commercial een hear-a-like gemaakt van een origineel Skatalites nummer.

Let's polish The Skatalites today. In spring 1964, The Skatalites recorded their first LP Ska Authentic at Studio One in Kingston and toured Jamaica as the creators of ska. Coxsone Dodd about their first gig: "At the formation of the band, I supplied the PA system, microphones and what ever it is. Also the guitar amplifier and other amplifier. I helped with transportation and I supplied storage for equipment and instruments. I was a part of promoting the first gigs and other gigs to get it off the ground, because I figured more or less, if I am recording the Skatalites, its good to get them popular out in the streets, yunno?"

Month of the forgotten: Jimmy Witherspoon - Big legged woman

Jimmy Witherspoon is een 'blues shouter'. Hij kon hard en meeslepend zingen. Zijn eerste opname dateert van 1945. In 1997 stierf hij aan keelkanker. Hij speelde tot zijn dood met talloze blues- en jazzgoden. In mijn platenkast staat hij in het heilige gedeelte. Naast Big Joe Turner (zie gisteren :-). Deze maand gaan we wat stof afblazen van mijn idolen uit het verre verleden. Voor mij komt alle rock en indie op dit blog voort uit de blues. De blues komt uit het diepe zuiden van de USA. Spirituals en Work songs die de diepe ellende beschrijven. Nog altijd hoor ik liever een rockband over ellende zingen, dan die commerciële feel good. Het is bij Jimmy altijd de moeite waard om te luisteren naar zijn verhaal. Hij dwingt het af. En hoe vaak komt het nog voor. Echt luisteren naar je eigen muziek.

Witherspoon's style of blues - that of the "blues shouter" - became unfashionable in the mid-1950s, but he returned to popularity with his 1959 album, Jimmy Witherspoon at the Monterey Jazz Festival, which featured Roy Eldridge, Woody Herman, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Earl Hines and Mel Lewis, among others. The great thing about Jimmy: he forces you to listen to the song. And that is rare nowadays. Listening in a old fashioned way to a story from a great singer.

Month of the forgotten: Big Joe Turner -Shake, rattle and roll

Hoewel zijn grootste faam in de jaren vijftig begon met zijn rock-'n-roll-hits, zoals het nummer Shake, Rattle and Roll, strekt zijn carrière van de jaren twintig tot de jaren tachtig. Turner had meerdere bijnamen, waaronder The Boss of the Blues en Big Joe Turner (vanwege zijn postuur). Hij ontdekte zijn liefde voor muziek door de betrokkenheid met de kerk. De muziekcriticus Robert Palmer van New York Times zei: ..his voice, pushing like a Count Basie solo, rich and grainy as a section of saxophones, which dominated the room with the sheer sumptuousness of its sound. Zelf ben ik fan van zijn jaren 70 en 80 werk. Jazzy blues of andersom. Tip: koop op Itunes: my little honeydripper. Of nog beter: Mornin', noon and night (met Dizzie Gillespie op trompet).

Joseph Vernon Turner was born in Kansas City on May 18, 1911. His singing career started in the boogie-woogie era of the late 1930's and spanned over four decades.
Joe Turner's musical talent crossed over many boundrys melding R&B with big band swing and blues with rock n' roll. Turner performed live and recorded with a multitude of legendary musicians such as jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Turner has also been given credit for helping create and shape the origins of rock n' roll. Big Joe Turner is possibly best remembered for his performances of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" written by C. Calhoun. In 1954 it became his top #1 hit record. The song was again made popular by Elvis Presley and Bill Haley and the Comets. Between 1951 and 1961 Joe Turner achieved tremendous success recording for Atlantic Records. Although his recording career continued until his death in 1985. Big Joe Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
