Door NME al de hemel in geschreven, deze band uit Glasgow (omgedoopt in Glasvegas). Ook hield de BBC een Sounds of 2008-poll, waar de meest talentvolle nieuwkomers werden gekozen. Met Geraldine en Daddy's Gone vielen ze vorig jaar op.
Glasvegas leunt zwaar op Wall of sound-achtige new wave en shoegaze. Flowers & Football Tops is de nieuwe single, die eind februari uitkomt.

Indie, poppy. Oren Lavie pendelt tussen Berlijn, New York en Tel Aviv. De video en de muziek redden het samen om een plek op Oorbijter te krijgen. Al gaat het ons altijd om de muziek en is de video een leuke bijwerking. Deze clip tilt zichzelf uit de prut die we dagelijks bekijken.

Folk is klef. Ja hoor. Je hebt gelijk. Folk. Bleh. Niets voor mij. Ik begrijp het. Americana. Wat? Americana. Hoef je niet te kennen. Alena komt uit Portland. Zingt met zo'n kantelstem a la Sinead O' Connor. Heb ik ook een hekel aan. Aan Sinead. Huilebalk. Dus er is bijna geen reden meer om deze clip op play te zetten. Ik snap het. De gitaren van Asobi Seksu vind ik ook erg ruig. Misschien moet je gewoon die clip van Asobi hieronder op gaan zoeken. Alena is niet ruig. En verre van hip. Maar ik vind het fantastisch om naar nieuwe muziek te luisteren. En pas achteraf beoordelen of het wel of niet jouw 'cup of tea' is. Heb ik vrede mee. Maar nooit eens proberen om naar folk te luisteren betekent geen Billy Prince Billy, Dustin Kensrue, Great Lake Swimmers... en geen Alela Diane.

Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the bend

Nog maar even de nieuwe Asteroids Galaxy Tour promoten. Zit al lange tijd in onze iPods (voor dat product is deze song ook in een reclame gebruikt), maar begint nu een beetje door te zoemen hier en daar. Zelfs bij Giel. Around the bend laat de lente vroeg intreden dit jaar. Het debuutalbum van de Deense band 'Fruit' volgt snel.

Beirut. Dezelfde leuke gekte als Sufjan Stevens. Dit is een single van de EP The March of the Zapotec. Zach Condon heeft dit keer zijn eigen sound (blazers, clarinet) met mexicaanse invloeden verweven.

LR Rockets - Dance It Away

Na wat singletjes is de EP van LR Rockets uit. Dance It Away heet ie, net als de nieuwste track. Het Oost-Londense viertal put ruim uit de post punk en gooit er een groovy saus overheen. Het maakt het niet bijster origineel, wel dansbaar en energiek. En dat maar 2 minuten.

Ben Folds - Cologne

Sommige top 2000 nummers hebben nooit op 1 gestaan en zijn als ruwe diamant door onze herinneringen geslepen tot briljante nummers. Dit piano nummer had zo maar in onze top 2000 kunnen staan, en elk jaar een paar plaatsjes hoger. Tot iedereen er over een jaar of twintig de volle schoonheid van inziet. Ben Folds met Cologne is wat mij betreft schitterend. Ben komt uit Nasville. Album: Way to normal.

The View - Shock Horror

Sinds Same Jeans zijn de lads van The View niet meer weg te denken uit de Britse scene. Nieuwe video is Shock Horror, het nieuwe album Which Bitch. Beide komen volgende week uit.

Morgan Geist - Ruthless city

Ingetogen, prachtig melodieus nummer voor een man die thuis is in Detroit techno. Zijn nieuwe album heet: Double night time. Veel, erg veel handclaps en synths van deze veelzijdige muzikant uit Brooklyn. Disco is helemaal terug.

Morgan: "Kids think they like or understand disco, or "electro" or whatever they are calling it, but it's actually their own perception of what disco is, not actually what disco is, or was. It's akin to me telling my 13-year-old sister that techno was created by black people in Detroit and her laughing, thinking I was making a joke. It wasn't a joke! Loney Dear - Airport surroundings

Eerste single van het album Dear John. Meteen een voller geluid, minder isolaat. Het lijkt erop dat dit vierde album een andere koers gaat varen. Meer synths, maar altijd met die ietwat trieste stem van de Zweed Emil Svanängen.

Dead Confederate - The Rat

Al vier maanden oud eigenlijk, maar Dead Confederate verdient nog wel een luisterbeurt. Post-grunge uit Georgia. Bang Bang! Van het album Wrecking Ball.

frYars ft. Dave Gahan - Visitors

Ben al een tijdje fan van frYars. Ik heb de clip The Ides hieronder erbij gezet als bewijs dat deze jongen barst van het talent. Electronica met weergaloze melodielijnen. Los in de schouders. Prettig. Uit Londen. Deze jongen is 18. Maar eerst Visitors met Dave Gahan, de warm donkere stem van Depeche Mode. Het album van frYars heet Dark Young Heart en komt in maart uit.

Translation: This guy is 18 and very talented. Can't wait for his album Dark Young Hearts.

Hockey - Too Fake

Hockey zou wel eens een opvallende band in 2009 kunnen worden. Ze komen uit Portland, Oragon. Met de drive van pakweg The Strokes, met het dansbare van bands als LCD Soundsystem. Heeft dus verder niets met ballen en Fatima Moreira de dinges te maken. En gelukkig maar. Check het zelf even.

Translation: Hockey, four blokes from Portland, Oragon. Could be the next big thing. Has nothing to do with sports, it's kickass music.

The Golden Silvers - Arrows of eros/ Magic touch / Queen..

Band uit Londen brengt puntige indie pop songs die blijven hangen als een Oorbijter. Ze waren winnaars op Glastonbury bij de nieuwe bands. Ze gebruiken geen gitaar. Dat geeft altijd een open geluid. Beloftevolle band voor 2009.

Translations: sounds like "Keane's evil cousins", as the band put it. The two acts share an unashamed love of big tunes and big choruses.

Shiny Toy Guns - Ghost Town

Ghost Town is een track van het al weer vierde album binnen vier jaar, Season of Poison (release in november) electronica/indie/rock band from Los Angeles. De band werd onder meer groot dankzij de eigen MySpace-pagina en scoorde in 2007 zelfs al een Grammy-nominatie voor Best Electronic/Dance Album met We Are Pilots. Ghost Town raakt aan de gothic, maar is net zo goed dansbaar. Het maakt het een intrigerende song.

Kijk naar de fan-made music video. Daar moeten we het voorlopig nog even mee doen.

Thomas Tantrum - Rage Against The Tantrum

Met z'n vieren zijn ze, Thomas Tantrum, met zangeres Megan Thomas als blikvangster. Lilly Allen schijnt een grote fan van de band uit Birmingham te zijn. Het titelloze debuutalbum kwam in september uit, Rage Against the Tantrum is daarvan de tweede single. Overigens al sinds november uit. Een hitje dat bij vaker draaien steeds aanstekelijker wordt.

Gary Go - Wonderful

Mooi poplied geschreven door debutant singer songwriter Gary Go. Heeft net een platencontract. Komt uit Londen en is druk met het opnemen van zijn eerste album in Woodstock, NY, Manhattan, Praag en London.

Het kan commercieel wel wat worden met deze vijfmansband uit Echo Park, California. De kruising tussen indie pop en hiphop (er zijn twee rappers/zangers) zal bij velen tot de verbeelding spreken. In This City was ook al zo aanstekelijk, Violent & young doet dat nog eens over. Ze waren in oktober trouwens al te zien in Paradiso.

This is a hit. The happy lunchbreak of the day. Beyond, between or next to Scissor Sisters and Mika. "I wanna have sex with you/cause I'm obsessed with you."

Ik wil gelijk maar even stilstaan bij dit hele album. Zelden zo'n leuke volstrekte muzikale gekte gehoord die weer even bewijst dat vrijheid van geest en goed kunnen spelen een feest van verrassingen kan opleveren.

Wat een vrijheid. Fantastisch melodieus album van band uit New York. Let ook op hun internetshow. Erg leuk.

We Are The Physics - Bulimia Sisters

Als je Devo kon waarderen, dan hou je ook van We Are The Physics. De band uit Glasgow bracht vorig jaar het debuutalbum We Are The Physics Are OK At Music. Veel bleeps, belletjes, gekke geluiden en andere vreemde sounds. Het maakt de band net ff anders. Van hun nieuwe single Bulimia Sisters is helaas nog steeds geen video geschoten. Schande heren!

Als je denkt dat de Manchester-sound altijd hetzelfde klinkt, heb je het deze keer mis. Al sinds november uit, deze debuutsingle van Everything Everything: Suffragette Suffragette. Cage the elephant - Back against the wall

Rockband uit Kentucky. Dit nummer klinkt als een frisse uitvoering van de Red Hot Chili Peppers. Maar ze zijn het niet. Ze punken, funken erop los. De nieuwe EP heet naar dit eerste nummer en komt in februari uit. De band van de broers Matt en Brad Shultz gaat hoge ogen gooien.

Indie pop band opgericht door de in Londen wonende Zweed Simon Balthazar. Melancholika vermengd met een flinke scheut plezier. Ze rekenen David Bowie en Willem Loos tot hun fans. Debuutalbum is bijna klaar, dit is eerste single.

Twee ouwe knarren die er stevig op los rocken. We hebben het over Mick Jones, voorheen van The Clash en de ex van Generation X: Tony James. Samen vormen ze deze band sinds 2002. Gitaarriff doet een beetje aan de Bodyrockers denken, maar ze komen ermee weg.

The new year - Seven days and seven nights (airport)

Prachtige pianoballad van The new year, band uit NYC. Wow, wat een lekker nummer. Daar waar Coldplay het met elk nieuw album steeds groter zocht, is deze band nog puur, klein en ongerept mooi. Niet verkloot door een producer die zijn eigen stempel door het unieke geluid van de band moet drukken.

Translation: pure pianoled song, simple, without the help of a 'great' producer who's killing the unique sound of a band for ego reasons.

The Sedan Vault - Unidentified Flying Subjects

Als je van Mars Volta of Bloc Party houdt, dan is The Sedan Vault welkome oorvulling. Unidentified Flying Subjects is als nummer en als clip een ongeleid projectiel dat toch aardig zijn doel bereikt. Het nieuwe concept album Vanguard gaat over de opkomst en ondergang van een terroristische groepering. Hopelijk gaat deze keuze een doorbraak niet in de weg zitten van deze geweldige Belgische rockers.
