Willems Sunday Re-issue: ELO - Here is the news / Showdown

De tune van de VPRO is 100% van ELO. Geweldig indiedance nummer uit 1981 dat nog steeds staat als een huis. Het is in 1981 als de band de disco de rug toekeert en het jaren 80 geluid gaat opzoeken. Veel 'Moroder' synthesizers dus. Het mocht niet veel baten. Het succes nam af en de band bracht nog twee albums uit (1983 & 1986) om van het contract af te komen. In 2001 richtte Jeff Lynn (voorman) opnieuw ELO op. Het album Zoom zou met een grote wereldtournee worden ondersteund. Maar niemand kocht kaartjes...

Showdown met een funky gitaarlick van Jeff (die hiervoor een gitaar leende van Marc Bolan) komt uit 1973. Lennon was fan van dit nummer. Zo hadden The Beatles geklonken als ze in de jaren 70 door waren gegaan, sprak hij tijdens een radiointerview.

John Lennon was a guest of a New York City radio station, where he commented that if the Beatles had stayed together, they would sound like ELO on Showdown, calling them the "Son of Beatles." Lennon: "Although they're doing things we never did, obviously. But I remember a statement they made when they first formed was to carry on from where the Beatles left off with Walrus, and they certainly did. And for those people who like to know where licks and things come from, which I do.... this is a beautiful combination of I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye and Lightning Strikes Again by Lou Christie, and it's a beautiful job with a little Walrus underneath."

Het debuutalbum Modern Rituals heeft hetzelfde effect als dat van Fleet Foxes. Meteen raak van begin tot einde. Misschien klinkt het daardoor allemaal iets te gemakkelijk.. Maar het is nooit goed. Hoedanook. Mooie poppy folkrock en rete-catchy. 22 november Bitterzoet, Amsterdam.

Space Siren - This Radar

Tijd voor de Voorhoutse band Space Siren. Ze zijn al een jaartje of vijf bezig en verdienen meer aandacht. Nieuw liedje heet This Radar. Noisepop, shoegaze, kijk maar hoe je het wil noemen. Het klinkt in ieder geval lekker gelaagd en gejaagd. Video is ook prachtig.

His album titled "Good Things" was released on September 30, 2010.

Oh land - Sun of a gun / Heavy eyes

Oh Land was enraptured by the combination of experimental and classical arts. "My goal is to sound like I'm from 2050, but still feel really classic, like the music is an old friend," said Oh Land. She spent her days pirouetting as a ballet dancer at the Danish Royal Ballet Academy when an injury forced her to reinvent herself and discover her true talent and passion as a musician. Oh Land soon released her first album, Fauna, which garnered critical acclaim in her homeland of Denmark.

De opvolger van Crossfire is uit. Brandon Flowers kreeg Paradiso ook plat in zijn eentje. Ik vind het album een beetje weeïg hier en daar, maar vooruit...de nieuwe video.

His solo album doesn't impress me much, but hey, it's still Killers-boss Brandon Flowers. New video.

Foals - Blue Blood

Foals kennen we van puntige indiesongs als Hummer, Balloons en Cassius. Maar ook van het bijzondere Spanish Sahara. Hopelijk komt het besef dat we hier met een bijzondere band te maken hebben. Blue Blood is weer een juweeltje.

Warpaint - Undertow

Warpaint is een all-girls band uit LA met een mix van dromerige post-punk en psychedelica. Zangeres Emily Kokal is de ex van John Frusciante. Klein detail, maar toch leuk om te weten. Album heet The Fool (geen verwijzing naar Frusciante denk ik?) en dit is de eerste single/video.

All girls band Warpaint knows how to write a dreamy post-punk song. First full-length album is called The Fool.

Preston Park - Little bottle

De jaren 80. OMD. Scarface. Depeche Mode. Het zijn zomaar herinneringen die binnenvallen toen ik dit nummer hoorde van Preston Park uit Parijs. Gemaakt samen met Young Monday. Lekker thuis pielen op een mac. Geen platenlabel. Hoor je daar een Frans accent? Ja.

Monster Magnet is een van mijn favo bands of all time. Achtste album is Mastermind. Gods and Punks breekt niet met de traditie van spacy stonerrock. Integendeel.

The band's 8th album, Mastermind, impressively continues the tradition of delivering larger-than-life riffs and killer grooves. Gods and Punks is the first single to be taken from the album Mastermind. Monster Magnet, one of my all time favorite bands.

Killing Joke - European Super State

Absolute Dissent heet het nieuwe album van Killing Joke. Het is het veertiende album in de 32 (!) jaar dat de band inmiddels bestaat. European Super State is eigenlijk gewoon een indiedance nummer. Lekker vet, zwaar leunend op de electro beats. Een bewijs dat de band met zijn tijd mee gaat.

Killing Joke still is an important band. Absolute Dissent is the new album. Nr 14 in 32 years. European Super State is a great indie dance song. It reflects the spirit of the age.

Tensnake - Coma cat

Zit na een periode van - nu even niet - weer helemaal in de dance. Poppy dance. Smerige dance. Disco dance. Whatever. Dit is Tensnake. DJ uit Hamburg. Lekkere track. Binnenkort in Trouw. 22 oktober.

Tensnake is a Hamburg based producer and founder of the label Mirau Musik and Glossy. His music is deeply influenced by the early 80’s Boogie and Italo Disco sound.

Fitz and The Tantrums - Moneygrabber

Al een halfjaar uit deze sixties/seventies soulplaat van Fitz and The Tantrums. Indrukwekkend moet ik zeggen, maar nu pas ontdekt. Toegegeven: ook dankzij 3FM. Het debuutalbum heet Pickin’ Up The Pieces.

Fitz and The Tantrums makes brash ’60s-style pop, heavily influenced by soul acts from the (late) sixties and (early) seventies. There's no guitar in it, only vintage organ and crisp drums. Debut album is Pickin’ Up The Pieces. The single Moneygrabber is out for a while now, but has lots of airplay in Holland at the moment.

My Chemical Romance - Na na na

Van het vierde album 'Danger Days: The True Lies Of The Faboulous Killjoys' dat volgende maand uitkomt. Lichter dan ze ooit hebben geklonken. Na na na wordt de meezinger van dit najaar.

Nog maar weer eens een goed nummer van de Britten die eigenlijk al bijna aan hun 25-jarige jubileum toe zijn. My Foolish Pride past goed bij deze lente-achtige dag.

Mumford & Sons hebben de alt-folk weer op de kaart gezet. Kurran & The Wolfnotes doen net zo goed mee. Prachtig liedje. Nu de volle zalen nog.

Mumford & Sons paved the way for a comeback of the alt-folk. Kurran & The Wolfnotes are also a great example for this genre. Love this song.

Bag raiders - Way back home

Dance met een beetje indie. Mag ook. Lekkere track van Bag Raiders. Jaren 80 sound. Dit electro DJ duo uit Sydney heeft mijn Ipod al gevuld met een aantal lekkere remixes van oa Cut Copy en de M. Juggernauts. Nieuwe album heet simpel: Bag Raiders.
