People in Planes, een band uit Cardiff, Wales, maakte een erg on-Britse plaat met Beyond the Horizon. Eerder Amerikaans. Dat is ook te danken aan het wat emo-achtige stemgeluid van Gareth Jones. Last Man Standing is de nieuw video.

Net een nieuw nummer gehoord van Vampire Weekend. Meer Paul Simon kan ik qua Afrobeat niet aan, maar evenzogoed lekker hoor. Nu even alle aandacht voor mijn band to watch 2009: Golden Silvers. Ik heb ze al eerder in de schijnwerpers gezet. Erg leuk bandje. Heeft alles in zich om voorgoed door te breken. OORdeel zelf. Misschien is het geluid van deze band wel zo lekker omdat er even geen gitaren worden gebruikt.

Deze band uit Londen leefde maanden in een garage in Oklahoma en gebruikte de studio van The Flaming Lips om demo's te maken voor hun nieuwe, derde album. Om deze uiteindelijk in Londen op te nemen met Graham Sutton. Het album heet: Sun Gangs. Geniet!

New album: Primary colours klinkt veelbelovend als je dit nummer zijn volle 8 minuten zijn gang laat gaan. Heerlijk. Garage rockband The Horrors. Het nieuwe album is geproduceerd door Geoff Barrow (Portishead).

Wat een stem heeft Jeremy Straw.. Als je deze muziek in een genre wilt duwen zit je mooi met een probleem. Dit is namelijk niet echt te plaatsen. En dat maakt deze plaat tot misschien wel het eerste groeibriljantje van 2009. Heb hem nu een keer 10 gehoord en nog steeds groeit en groeit deze plaat. Geweldige track, geweldige clip. The Enemy had een supergoed debuutalbum: We'll Live and Die in These Towns (2007). Vooral in de UK was dat een geweldig succes. Dit is de eerste single van het nieuwe album Music For The People. Iets meer bombast, iets meer soul ook.

We trekken een nieuw blik dandy's open. Dit keer Hatchem Social. De Britse krant The Guardian beschreef ze als 'irrestistible'. Ik hoor in het begin toch even de Talking Heads met The lady don't mind, maar I don't mind.

Je gaat er toch even lekker voor zitten. Maar al snel rolt er zo'n geluid die je meestal aantreft in de - twee euro voor een nieuwe cd bak - uit je boxen. Het gaat nergens heen, wordt nergens spannend. Jammer. Het origineel Blue Monday is beter.

De heren van Redstone Hall hieronder moeten misschien even kijken naar Handsome Furs. Rockband komt met een (waarom denk ik aan Herman Brood?) track die meteen je hand naar de volumeknop brengt. Geweldig onheilspellend nummer van band uit Montreal. Album: face control.

De heren Redstone en Hall maken funky pop die zo de oren in glipt. Knap maar je vraagt je maar een ding af. Waar is het randje, waar gaat het ontsporen? Nou nergens. De mannen blijven net iets te lang keurig tussen de lijntjes kleuren. Is het daarom slecht? Nee.

Jack Peñate, Brit van Spaanse afkomst, weet alternative music goed te mixen met zijn zuiderlijke roots. Man ook met een uitstekende live-reputatie. Nieuwe single Tonight's Today komt eind deze maand uit.

Art Brut is en blijft humor. Formed a band ("Formed a band...Look at us...we formed a band") was vijf jaar geleden mijn eerste kennismaking met deze Britse band, mogelijk vernoemd naar wijnhandelaar-kunstschilder Jean Dubuffet. Zanger Eddy Argos kan een showtje neerzetten, omdat hij extreem grappig is. Dat in combi met de rammelende rock en de geinige teksten onderscheidt Art Brut zich in goede zin. Nieuwe video is Alcoholics Unanimous.

Het is al een tijdje uitkijken naar Rules, het nieuwe album van DJ/Producer Erland Oye. Maar hij is er. Het is allemaal poppy en melodieus, maar altijd een rafelig electro randje eraan. Zeer toegankelijk, lekker dansbaar. Topplaat.
Electropop. Band draait voornamelijk rondom Joseph Mount. De afgelopen drie jaar remixte hij Roots Manuva, Franz Ferdinand, The Klaxons, The Young Knives, Zero 7, Ladytron, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Kate Nash, Love Is All, Late of the Pier,and Lykke Li.. Joseph: "Basically, I only like remixers that really care about what they're doing. I can honestly say that I have got really involved in all of my remixes. If I’ve not got anywhere with one I will tell whoever it is that I’m giving up. That doesn't happen that often." Nu is er dus eindelijk tijd voor zijn nieuwe album: Nights out (2008).

Electro rock project zorgt voor bijna dansbare indiedance. Jenny en Jan is een duo uit Brooklyn. De namen zijn, je dacht het al, bedacht. Door op te trekken met DJ James Lavelle en Fujiya & Miyagi weet dit kunstzinnige duo zich uit de ondergrond omhoog te wroeten. Great!

Spirit of Apollo is net uit. N.A.S.A is een innige samenwerking tussen Squeak E. Clean en DJ Zegon en hun muzikale vrienden en hun vrienden. Etcetera. Aan dit nummer werkten mee RZA, John Frusciante en Barbie Hatch.

Om het even kort te houden: ik vind deze band al geweldig sinds ik voor het eerst met ze kennismaakte (X-Ray). Toothpaste Kisses was het voorlopige hoogtepunt. Deze nieuwe single No Kind Words wordt hopelijk eindelijk de doorbraak voor The Maccabees.

Denk Vampire Weekend of Death Cab for Cutie, maar dan jonger. Uit Ierland deze mannen. Hun EP heet: Four words to stand on. Band to watch.

Het kan raar lopen. Dit nummer brachten wij vorig jaar al eens als tip (ergens in het voorjaar). Nu is het 'clapclap'-nummer weer up & running. Dus verdienen Tilly & The Wall hier een prominent plaatsje.

Wow, wat is dit toch een prachtig nummer. Recent eindelijk een clipje gevonden zodat ik hem met jullie kan delen. Matt Hales heet de enige man achter Aqualung. Zijn nieuwe album heet Words and music.

Ik denk dat we met het album Heavy Ghost het eerste diepgelaagde album van 2009 te pakken hebben dat maar niet gaat vervelen. OORdeel zelf, maar deze man uit Indiana, USA is briljant. Shine on David Stith!
Translantion: This crazy diamond David Stith comes from a musical family: his father is a college wind ensemble director and former church choir director; his grandfather is professor emeritus in the music department at Cornell University; his mother is a pianist; his sisters sing opera, play piano, tap dance, play timpani and are excellent soft ball players. In college, David attempted writing a novel and a children's book, illustrating his work with original woodcut prints. His pursuit of writing and illustration brought him from Rochester to Brooklyn, where he took up work as a graphic designer. While in Brooklyn, David befriended Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond), and soon after began facilitating, in small technical ways, the recording of her album Bring Me The Workhorse. This, in turn, spurred David to begin writing and recording songs of his own. It was a casual, private affair. He spent countless days stored away in his bedroom, sketching folk songs with epic electronic gestures, a rekindling of passions for his first familial love: music. David completed his first catalog of songs for an album called Ichabod and Apple, written and recorded in the first month of his song-writing experiments. Since then, he has set out to record his first album with Asthmatic Kitty. He writes songs for the same reasons he enjoys a good conversation: it's just natural. His songs come out of a knock-about life, pressed by the urge to overcome insecurities, to probe questions, to revisit dreams and visions.
