Ik denk dat we met het album Heavy Ghost het eerste diepgelaagde album van 2009 te pakken hebben dat maar niet gaat vervelen. OORdeel zelf, maar deze man uit Indiana, USA is briljant. Shine on David Stith!
Translantion: This crazy diamond David Stith comes from a musical family: his father is a college wind ensemble director and former church choir director; his grandfather is professor emeritus in the music department at Cornell University; his mother is a pianist; his sisters sing opera, play piano, tap dance, play timpani and are excellent soft ball players. Wow, Nighttiming is een lekkere moody plaat. Staat hoog in mijn Ipod top 10, lately. Coconut records komt uit California en bestaat uit Jason Schwartzman. Zijn nieuwe album heet Davy is net uit. Bij gebrek aan een clip post ik dit nummer van zijn eerste album Nighttiming. Het verklapt in één keer zijn talent om goede popliedjes te schrijven. Jason speelde ook een hoofdrol in de films The Darjeeling Limited en Rushmore.

Ladytron laat het allemaal wat meer poppy klinken op Tomorrow, maar ook horen we een bijna Peter Hook-achtige New Order basdreun. Toegankelijker dan ooit eigenlijk.

Lijkt wel een clip van Gilbert & George, zo arty farty, maar ook dat maakt de comeback meer dan compleet. Ben geen fan, zal het nooit worden, maar vind ze wel een fenomeen.

Op Firstborn is het drumstel even thuisgelaten, het lijkt wel een bonus nummer van Fleet Foxes. Een erg mooie ook nog eens.

Na Quicksand is dit de nieuwe van La Roux. Elektrodame Elly Jackson kan irritant en ook mooi hoog zingen. Als je daar ergens een middenweg tussen kan vinden, is deze track het luisteren waard.

Beste Huub, als De Dijk ooit nog een duet moet doen met een bekende ster, dan is het natuurlijk met Ray. Three More Days heeft de blazers. Jij hebt de stem en vast ook een gevatte vertaling. Alle bloggers vallen over elkaar heen om The Presets als kopieermachine weg te zetten. Uiteraard is de sound van de band behoorlijk 80's. Maar het neemt niet weg dat dit nummer geweldig in elkaar steekt.

Het Canadese viertal bestaat al een jaar of 10, maar zonder die echt grote stap te hebben gemaakt. Het nieuwe album Fantasies, uit op 2 maart, geven ze in eigen beheer uit Frontvrouwe Emily Haines zingt in de beste traditie van de overzeese van de indierock, denk de zusjes Deal, Belly, The Throwing Muses, etc. Goed, vrouwelijk, stevig en toch niet al te ingewikkeld. Jammer dat Help I'm Alive nog geen video heeft, maar zo kan het ook.

Doet denken aan die zeldzame mooie emotionele nummers die je even je adem doen inhouden (Verily van Merz). Twee jonge gasten uit Wales schreven hem al in 2005. Vorig jaar kwam er een video bij. Gelukkig.

Starsailor is dit jaar weer terug met een nieuw album en dat heeft even geduurd. Met Love is Here (2001) en de single Alcoholic behoorden ze tot de grote nieuwe beloftes. Dat gevoel is - ook bij mij - een beetje weggezakt. Tussen het vorige en nieuwe album zitten inmiddels bijna vier jaar. Maar de sterke, getormenteerde stem van James Walsh geeft hun muziek nog altijd iets extra's. Tell Me It's Not Over komt van het in maart te verschijnen album All The Plans.

Vergeet ff alles waarmee Pete Doherty doorgaans in het nieuws komt. Geef zijn eerste soloalbum Grace/Wasteland een kans. Goed, zingen kan hij nog steeds niet, maar hij doet zijn best en soms komen er - net als bij Babyshambles en Libertines - goede liedjes bovendrijven. Op Last of the English Roses is hij bijna breekbaar en aandoenlijk. Maar het blijft wel Pete natuurlijk he?

Fight Like Apes uit Dublin, Ierland. Waarschijnlijk gezien op Eurosonic. We hebben het hier over een zeer talentvolle band die het waard is om meer airplay te krijgen. Zangeres Mayday heeft een Amerikaanse stijl, het net verschenen album Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion is een wilde mix van gekte, powerpop, grungy gitaren, pompende bas en bleepende elektro. Tie me up with jackets is een sterke single.
Translation: Influenced by bands like Sonic Youth and lo-fi heroes Pavement. This Irish band definitely deserves more airplay. Tie me up with jackets is a great song.
Mark (Talk Talk) kreeg zijn eerste echte grote hit met Life's what you make it. Hierna gaf EMI hem volledige vrijheid en geld voor het volgende album The Spirit of Eden. Dat album is volledig geimproviseerd tot stand gekomen in een donkere, met kaarsen verlichte studio. Anderhalf jaar zagen ze geen zonlicht en zaten ze dag en nacht met muzikanten te jammen. Nog steeds staat dit album als een huis. Niet gedateerd. Nog even prachtig. Kunst. Dat was het waarmee Talk Talk tevoorschijn kwam. EMI was pissed en sleepte de band voor de rechter vanwege een obscuur en niet commercieel geluid. Beide partijen voelden zich genaaid. Uiteraard verloor EMI, maar Mark Hollis was er klaar mee en vertrok naar Polydor. EMI bracht It's my life uit (de oude sound van de band) en het werd een grote hit. Daarna volgde nog een schandalig en vooral slecht remix album die na een proces van Mark tegen EMI van de markt werd gehaald. Het album Laughing Stock kwam uit bij Polydor en klonk nog experimenteler. Kort na de release stopte de band. In 1998 maakte Mark Hollis nog één solo album en keerde de muziek industrie de rug toe. Hij speelde nog piano op Unkle's - Chaos (1998) en werkte nog even met Anja Garbarek (2001). Hierna is er een oorverdovende stilte ontstaan rondom Mark Hollis.
